Stage 1 vs Stage 2 vs Stage 3 Remaps — Which Is Right for Your Car?

If you've started looking into ECU remapping, you've probably come across the terms Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. But what do they actually mean — and more importantly, which one is right for your car?

Stage 1 — The Entry Point

Stage 1 is a software-only remap. No hardware modifications required. We read your ECU, write a custom-calibrated map, and that's it. Stage 1 typically delivers 30-40% more power and a noticeable increase in torque, along with sharper throttle response and often improved fuel economy. It's the most popular option because it's affordable, straightforward, and works on completely standard vehicles. If you drive a standard car in Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham or anywhere across the North East and want more performance without modifying anything, Stage 1 is where you start.

Stage 2 — For Modified Vehicles

Stage 2 builds on Stage 1 but requires supporting hardware modifications — typically an upgraded intercooler, induction kit, or exhaust system. The remap itself is more aggressive, unlocking significantly greater power and torque gains than Stage 1 alone. If you've already started modifying your car with performance hardware, Stage 2 is the natural next step. The key thing to understand is that Stage 2 isn't just a bigger remap — it's a remap calibrated to work with your specific hardware setup.

Stage 3 — Maximum Performance

Stage 3 is the pinnacle. It's designed for heavily modified vehicles with upgraded turbo hardware, fuelling upgrades, intercooler, and full supporting modifications. Stage 3 delivers the most aggressive power gains available, but it's not for everyone. Your car needs to be mechanically sound and properly built to handle the increased loads. If you're building a serious performance car and want every last bit of power, Stage 3 is where you end up.

Which stage is right for you?

  • Standard car, want more performance? Stage 1.
  • Already got some mods (intercooler, exhaust, intake)? Stage 2.
  • Fully built performance car with turbo upgrades? Stage 3.
